THE REAL MEANING OF LIFE
©2015 kaycee kerry

Tears of joy
Tears of pain
will always be here

sometimes we laughed,
at times we cry
yet life goes on

Chorus
know it's true
there’s more to life than we can be see
there ought to be some reason
Very soon
we’ll find our way back to the sun
what's the real meaning of life
In 2018, my uncle passed away. The agony of his demise triggered a thought that I had suppressed for a very long time. You see, when I was eight years old, my immediate elder brother died. His death stirred a conundrum, which my perplexed little soul galvanized. And some of the questions aroused in my consciousness at that time were: what is the real meaning of life? Why are we here on Earth? What is the purpose of existence? Is there more to human existence than to dream, achieve those dreams, and die? And what is this “I” that I call myself?
You will agree with me that these questions are pretty complex, especially for an 8 year-old; yet, I have grappled with them since my childhood. In search of answers, I read tons of books, studied philosophers and philosophies, joined several religious and spiritual groups, all to no avail; the answers remain elusive. In my quest for answers, I found similar minds who have tried to unravel these mysteries. Rene Descartes, the renowned French philosopher, declared “cogito ergo sum,” meaning “I think therefore I am,” in other words, “I exist!” this statement confirms consciousness. But something vital is missing from Descartes’ declaration. Who does this “I” referred to? Now some may say Descartes, in calling his existence into doubt, was not referring to an inner being, rather to his physical consciousness. But assuming we accept the fact that we exist only as physical beings, this “I” that I call myself needs further explanation! Obviously, our duality is evident in our thoughts, because we hold arguments within ourselves; but if man does not have a dual personality, then who is having those conversations within man, why does it seem there is another being that holds contrary opinion to all my intentions? Without any reasonable doubt, I agree with Descartes, but beyond that, I just want to know who or what this entity we call “I” really is.

I see a man
on the street
With no home of his own

He took a drink
And Had a smoke
And laid down and cried

know it's true
there’s more to life than we can see
there ought to be some reason
very soon
we’ll find our way back to the sun
what's the real meaning of life
Aristotle suggested that “happiness” is the ultimate goal every person seeks when he or she engages in any activity. He said all the actions we take tend to lead us directly or indirectly to happiness. Aristotle’s theory resonates with current trends, as people seem to be more concerned with pleasurable experiences than deep contemplation which he also considered to be the highest form of human experience. But just because people favour pleasurable experiences over a contemplative life does not make pleasurable living our ultimate reason for existence. For if happiness is the purpose of all human existence, then life must be worthless because happiness is relative; for instance, the happiness of a sociopath is the pain of the victim. No, I perceive man to be too intelligible to be satisfied with mere pursuit of pleasurable experiences.
Most religions point to a place of eternal bliss as our final destination, thus explaining Earth to be transitional. But why transition through Earth in the first place? What is the benefit or purpose of such transition? Some say we are here to learn human virtues such as goodness, love, beauty, justice and so on and so forth, so that we can control our bodies and our behavior. But this also is useless because our body does not come with us when we die! Then is it possible that there is another being that is conscious of these experiences, and that it is this non-physical being that holds the records and transfers these experiences to the next realm? Hmm…wao!.
Anyway, if we agree that there is something that records and transfers human experience to the next realm, then we can conclusively say that something else does exist beside this physical body!
Human beings are spiritual, and as such attract spiritual experiences; we are constantly yearning for our spiritual origin. For instance, when we are faced with an insurmountable challenge, we turn inward to seek guidance; when we have a health issue that defies medical solution, we turn to prayer; when we have an emotional problem that is pulling us apart we are pressed to meditate. All these inclinations indicate that there is something within us, that is leading, guiding and directing us towards a higher power. In other words, man is a synchronicity of two life forms, one visible, the other, invisible.

give me a reason for living
Is it wealth, is it love, is it fame
Cos very soon we will all be leaving
When we're done
we'll head home to the sun
At this time, we do not know who or what this entity we call “I” really is. Neither do we know the purpose of our existence, since I have argued that happiness alone is too vague a concept to define our reason for existence. However, a clue can be derived from one of the greatest teachers in human history; in the Gospel of John chapter 6 verses 38, in which Jesus said: “For I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me.” This means that, for every man or woman, there is a specific reason or purpose for your existence, you are here to serve a specific duty, you are here to execute a plan, and you are here to fulfill a mission.
Your life is not an accident; you are created specifically for those things you love to do best. So whatever you lay your hands on to do, as long as it brings you joy and fulfillment, as long as it meets a need, and as long as it’s good with God and good with man, that is your goal, that is your purpose, that is the reason you showed up on the scene.
In this same line of thinking, St Paul of Tarsus wrote to the Philippians in chapter 4:8, he said “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things that are true, whatsoever things that are honest, whatsoever things that are just, whatsoever things that are pure, whatsoever things that are lovely, whatsoever things that are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things, focus on these things, contemplate on these things because they are aligned with the divine design.
We are all unique in our different ways, no one has limited abilities, no one is deficient in ideas, and no one lacks the skills to succeed.
What is that idea that is burning hot within you that won’t let go, what is that creative urge that is keeping you awake all night, every night, what is that business idea that is pressing hard in your heart seeking expression? That is divinity calling, that is divinity prompting you to start what you came here to do. You came here to serve a purpose and that purpose is the meaning of your life.

Another town
another place
child is born

In her mind
She has no clue
Of her new world

And soon she’ll know
there's more to life than that can be seen
there ought to be some reason
Very soon
she”ll find her way back to the sun
what's the real meaning of life

chorus
Whats the real meaning of life (repeat till fade ) x2

Now that we know that our dreams, goals and aspirations are tied to our reason for existence, let us therefore focus on the tasks that we have on our hands. Use your skills, use your talents, use your abilities, be the best version yourself. Don't ever give up on your dreams, life could be difficult sometimes, yes I know. But whatever challenges you are going through, it's only temporary, because you are destined to succeed.
